About Us
The Queensland Bushfood Association exists as a fellowship of bushfood enthusiasts and practitioners drawn from a wide range of activities who express and share their interests in the many ways for which they are equipped, enriching each other by exchanging the fruits of their experience and learning.
The last twenty years have seen the emergence of a number of bush food-related groups in South East Queensland and Northern NSW. Some of these have been informal gatherings of like minded people and other have established along more formal lines with a constitution and clear goals.
The Queensland Bushfood Association formed in this period when a number of individuals from various backgrounds but all related to indigenous plants and their utilisation, gathered informally to share information and their mutual interests.
This initial gathering formed a committee to formalise the purpose and structure of their meetings. This led to the writing of the current Constitution and its acceptance by the delegates in April 2000. This Constitution now guides and underpins the purpose and functioning of the QBA.
In the words of the Constitution, the QBA exists to "promote the growing, use, understanding and related research and development, of Australian native plant foods in the State."
The QBA strives to achieve this primarily through "gathering and dissemination to Members by the Association of information relevant to (this purpose); State representation by the Association on a national basis; facilitation of 'networking' with the object of forming and supporting grower Sub-Communities, which may be region or species specific; and liaison by the Association with indigenous Australian groups and individuals to (i) facilitate co-operation between the Association and such groups or individuals; and (ii) facilitate participation by such groups and individuals in the Australian native food industry."
In August 2005, the QBA had some 70 members. They come from Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast and their hinterlands, the Darling Downs, Maryborough, Central Queensland, North Queensland and Northern NSW.
The QBA meets four times a year with three general meetings followed by the annual general meeting held in August. A management Committee is elected to provide ongoing support for the business of the Association and prepare for and follow up from these general meetings. This Committee meets within the 2 weeks prior to each General meeting.
